I’m Kate Marlow, and I write Emotions Made Simple.
For most of my life I’ve been more interested in how people feel than in what they say. Over the years, at work and at home, I noticed how often the hardest moments came down to a feeling nobody had a name for: the worry that came out as snapping at someone, the sadness that looked like tiredness, the envy hiding behind a joke. I started reading the research on emotions to understand my own, and I’ve never stopped.
I’m not a therapist, and this isn’t therapy. What I do is take one feeling at a time and explain it in plain words: what it is, why it shows up and what you can do with it. Every article is built on research I read carefully, and on a lot of ordinary life.
Where to start
If you’re new here, Start here has the three articles I’d read first. After that, the articles are grouped by feeling:
- Understanding emotions: what feelings are, how to name them and what to do when you feel too much or nothing at all.
- Anxiety and stress: overthinking, night-time worry, overwhelm and what anxiety does to the body.
- Anger: a short fuse, irritability, venting and resentment.
- Sadness and loneliness: low moods, grief, loneliness and tears.
- Guilt and shame: the feelings about ourselves, and how to put them down.
- Jealousy and envy: comparison, insecurity and wanting what others have.
- Happiness: calm, gratitude, laughter and enjoying life more.
- Positive emotions: hope, pride, awe, curiosity and kindness.
A new article goes up every week, and the newsletter arrives every Saturday.
